It’s been a while since Radiohead took the music world by storm with their novel “pay-what-you-like” approach to the release of their latest album, In Rainbows. During that time, there’s been lots of speculation as to the success of the idea from a commercial standpoint, and whether the model will be used more widely in future.#

It’s always nice when you receive an email from a band that has really made an effort. Not just with the music, but with the whole package, y’know… the promo material, the website, etc. Of course, it helps if you have a graphic design degree, but still..

Asthmaboy are Glindon Marten and John Boone, and they’ve made their full length album “Later Days” available to download completely free.

Influences include Sigur Ros, Beirut, Radiohead, The White Stripes, Outkast, Gorillaz, Cat Stevens… and many other bands I’ve never heard of! Quite an eclectic mix which does come across in the music.

The Bastard Fairies describe their music as oxymoronic, naughty but nice. Sounds lovely.

Hailing from Minneapolis, The Bastard Fairies are a 2-peice with a Mac, a copy of Garage Band, and a bunch old guitars and children’s toys.

“Memento Mori” was originally released free, as a 12 track download, but has since been released as a deluxe 17 track CD+DVD collection.

The free version is still available however, and can be downloaded from www.thebastardfairies.com.

The latest installment of the Share series - Vol. 7!

Again, not much is known about the content/genre of the music on offer, but if the quality is half as good as previous releases in the series, it’ll be worth downloading.

Fading Ways Music have released several compilations as downloadable samplers over the years.

The first 4 seem to be unavailable (we’re hunting, but even FWM don’t know where we might get them..), but the last 3 are still available.

Vol. 5 is the heaviest of the collections, with a Punk/Rock tint.

I’ve not been able to find out much about Ghost Away, other than the fact that they’re from Pennsylvania and have a free record (’Siberia’) for download at their website.

That said, I do love the album. They cite their influences as Radiohead, Brian Eno, Portishead, and Beck (amongst others) and you can certainly hear the trademarks of those in Ghost Away’s music.

The opening 2 or 3 tracks feel very “In Rainbows”, and then the album seems to move more towards guitar-based songs. However, all the songs here retain a certain eerie mood. (That’ll be the ghost then? - Mosh)

We couldn’t get too far into the life of NewMusicalOrder without mentioning Radiohead, and their breakthrough giveaway of In Rainbows.

Although many many people were doing this before Radiohead, the attention they received has certainly increased the interest in releasing free music from major acts.

Interestingly though, music industry data confirms that even though In Rainbows was available free, more people downloaded it from BitTorrent than through the official channels.

Sadly, In Rainbows is no longer available as a free download from www.inrainbows.com, but you can order the album on CD, Vinyl, and as a Limited Edition box set from www.amazon.com or www.amazon.co.uk.
